The benefits of blueberries upon the health of the body are astounding. These benefits have been known for a long time to humans, but especially in those areas where blueberries grow naturally. We will discuss some of these here. Blueberries contain high level of antioxidants, for example ellagic acid is naturally occurring in blueberries and has anti-cancer properties. High levels of vitamin C protect the heart. In addition, vitamins A and B improve the immune system and keep the body fit and safe against infections. This fruit also contains minerals (iron, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium) and trace elements of zinc, chromium and manganese. Other compounds found in blueberries are anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid with antioxidant effects. All these compounds lower the level of cholesterol in blood and are helpful in blood formation and maintaining the function of the eye retina. They cleanse and purify the body, regulate peristalsis of intestines, as well as improving overall metabolism. It would be possible to continue describing the health impact of blueberries, but it is not my purpose of rendering it as some kind of magical plant. In summary, among the many varieties of fruits and vegetables, it is clear that blueberries have an elite & preferential position. Even more notable since they are plentiful and inexpensive common “household” fruits compared to rarer examples such as Physalis or Rambutan which have far less exciting health benefits as compared to the blueberry.
