Blueberries are grown in the main idea of Koreňov - "Nature is the best treasurer and the finest artist. We should learn from her." Soil needs to be in natural condition without use of any artificial substances. Suitable field is the key point if we want to grow healthy and tasty blueberries. Koreňov is former meadow circa 600 meters above sea level which is located in protected area Kysuce. Wild blueberries grow in this place naturally, so it is the indicator which showed me, that everything is perfect here also for our blueberry garden. Of course our blueberries need some care. Except pruning, which is done in early spring, grass must be cut and pulled out. We do it manually twice a year without usage of any herbicides. The grass is dried to make hay for a horse. Then horse dung is returned back to field which is our only fertilizing process. We do not use any artificial fertilizer. Thanks to this circle, soil keeps natural simbiosis among plants, mushrooms, microorganisms and insects. All this biodiversity helps to keep blueberries in healthy condition without any fungicide or any insecticide. In the summer we often enjoy collecting wild strawberries and mushrooms directly under blueberry bushes. Against bird attacks and deer visits the field is protected by fence and bird nets in the main season. In Koreňov are grown two cultivars, Bluecrop and Chandler. Because of that, blueberries are well pollinated and are ripening throughout the whole season. Harvesting of blueberries starts usually in the end of july and ends in the middle of september, depending on weather.
