Brain tanned leather

Animal skin has been part of human life since the beginning untill present continuously. Thrugh centuries, people have developed many methods how to turn a raw skin into soft and strong material. Here you can find the method, which is probably the oldest one.
Brain tanning is a prehistorical method, of how animal skin is turned to useful hide. This method was common for nations in North America, Europe and also in Asia. It is most often assigned to native americans, because they have been relying on it untill very recent days. Traditional brain tanning does not require many material resources. Instead, you need to spend many hours doing hard, manual work.
Only animal brain and water is necessary to make hide. Then hide is smoked, if necessary, to be water resistant. Old cultures used only a few, very simple tools and some small variations in used materials were invented. But all of them are almost same, and finished product stays basically edible. It was appreciated in harsh times.
Buckskin is known for its specific attributes. Consider them before use. It was used for making clothing, tools and even housing.

Type of animal skin:
I use skin from animals, that are commonly found in Carphatian mountains:

The red deer
(Cervus elaphus)

The fallow deer
(Dama dama)

The mouflon
(Ovis musimon)

I seldomly work with skin from other animals, even from domestic animals, based on demand.
